NEWS Edited by Jan Claire

  • The British press reported that a 25-year-old Turkish woman living in London has been identified as one of the victims of the bombings there. The family of Ms. Gamze Gunoral reported that they have been officially informed of her death, though they have not been asked to identify her body. They were interviewed by a news correspondent and said they are currently working to receive her body after the examinations are completed. Gamze's handbag was recovered under the train where it was blown by the explosion.
  • As reported by the Turkish daily Hurriyet, Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan has strongly condemned two of the World's larger news agencies - Reuters and the BBC for calling the Kurdistan Workers Party a "militia" and not a terrorist organization. He went on to say that he believes terrorism is against humanity and can be overcome by joint international struggle. In his discussion with the media, Erdogan reminded those present that Turkey has lost 40,000 people to terrorism. "We have been monitoring the recent developments and we have no intention of stepping back." he said. Early Saturday we received the news that a bomb exploded in the western Turkish resort town of Kusadasi. News agencies are reporting that 5 people are dead. Kurdistan Workers Party is thought to be behind the blast.
  • On Wednesday night, Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan appeared on a CNN Turk interview program and was asked if he will be a candidate for the presidency of Turkey. He stated there's no such issue on the agenda at present, and he said, "There are two more years before the presidential election and we have locked ourselves on course to carry Turkey to a better level and status." As an example he said that Turkish per-capita income is will soon reach equivalent of $10,000. "When our party came in to power," he added, "The per capita income in Turkey was the equivalent of $2,100 U.S. Dollars. Currently the average Turk earns $4,300, which he said will go up in his second term.
  • In a report from the Foreign Affairs Committee meeting in the European Union Parliament held Tuesday, Turkish press is reporting that British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw stressed the strategic importance of Turkey's European Union membership and said that European Union should keep its promises. Mr. Straw said that Turkey should remain within the framework of the European Union, noting that Turkey will join the European Union when it has met the "Copenhagen Criteria". Mr. Straw added that Turkey has a major, strategic importance and that Turkey's accession into the European Union would help solve the Cyprus question, as well. The Italian Foreign Minister Gianfranco Fini echoed Straw's sentiments when he said, "I believe that a democratic, modern Turkey, which has a high living standard and sharing values of Europe is in the best interest of the European Union."
  • Turkish Daily News is on the story of the United States releasing a third of its pledged $30.5-million assistance package to Turkish Cypriots, launching a project to help them improve their business and banking services. In another development to further help end the isolation of Turkish Northern Cypress, a private airline from Azerbaijan said they would start regular flights to Turkish Cyprus, becoming the first non-Turkish carrier to fly direct to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
  • Turkish media are carrying the ongoing story of Mr. Cem Uzan, the Young Party leader, and former businessman who is now facing charges of establishing a crime network and carrying out criminal offenses in violation of Turkish banking laws. He testified in court, where 34 co-defendants are also on trial. The Anatolian News Agency reported yesterday that Mr. Uzan claimed he had not been granted a fair trial, and that telephone tapping records submitted as evidence were obtained illegally. He also alleged that prosecutors had described Mr. Uzan's family home as a "safe house," and he disputed that description strongly. He also told the court, "I believe you will realize that we did not establish a gang to commit crimes. I believe you will set us free." Other suspects on trial have dismissed involvement in the crimes specified in the indictments that claim the Uzan company made them sign documents and carry out transactions on behalf of the company - against their will. If found guilty, the defendants could face prison for between 12 and 45 years! Uzan family empire had been ordered by US courts to pay back $4.3 billion to Motorola and another $1.7 billion to Nokia in July 2003. Last year Turkish authorities seized the assets of the Uzan empire. Senior members of the family are on the run.
  • On Thursday, a leading finance magazine, "Euromoney," selected the Turkish bank, Akbank, as the "best bank in Turkey". It is the seventh time Akbank has been given the honor. In another story on the Turkish banking industry, the Spanish BBVA Bank, one of the largest in the World, is saying that Turkey is among several markets in the World where they are targeting business expansion. According to a Zaman news item quoting a BBVA press release, the research on purchasing a bank in Turkey continues but the company has not yet reached a concrete solution. Many sources have noted that Turkey is an attractive candidate for BBVA's expansion plans.

ARTS AND CULTURE Edited by Hayal Koc

  • The annual "Adalar (Islands) Festival" begins this weekend on Prince Island of Istanbul on Sunday, July 17th. The festival includes a wide array of musical performances, arts & crafts, film, and theater from around the World, as well as Turkey. There will be a total of over 18 concerts, 10 musical and dance performances, 6 film screenings, and several unique art galleries open to the public until the 24th of July. Several different countries will be represented, including Greece, Germany, and Belgium. Prince Islands, an archipelago that consists of nine islands, are just a few miles from Asian Istanbul in the Marmara Sea. It is less than an hour by ferry from the center of the city. The islands are free of cars and have many beautiful wooden houses, have a resort atmosphere and offer peace and quiet in a natural environment. Walks or tours with horse-drawn carriages through the streets of the islands, restaurants or cafes in this peaceful atmosphere are among the simple joys to be found on these islands.
  • Marc Levy, the famous romance author originally from Izmir, Turkey, will proudly bring his latest novel, "Just like Heaven" to the big screen. The movie will be produced by Steven Spielberg and financed by Dreamworks Productions. • In the latest archeology news, the lead archeologist at Catalhoyuk, the World's oldest urban civilization, has determined that the ancient community who lived there practiced an egalitarian lifestyle. Dr. Ian Hodder and his team of over 100 international archeologists found evidence of a real camaraderie and equality among the 5,000, to 10,000 settlers of the ancient city. Examples of this can be found in the communal religious structures, cemeteries and community terraces. Hodder noted that such a finding was indeed rare, as most ancient societies were structured around a key leader figure, such as a king or emperor. Hodder also emphasized the need for continued funding of the archeological project underway to unearth and preserve historical artifacts and boost tourism to the ancient city. The Turkish government has already taken the first step by placing the area under government protection and funding research efforts.
  • After a successful run, the Istanbul International Jazz Festival ends this weekend, with three final performances by The Three Guitars, The Paris Combo, and the DMC Jazz Performers.
