  • Officials inaugurated the first section of a 1,760-kilometer, $3.2 billion, U.S.-backed pipeline on Wednesday that will bring landlocked Caspian Sea oil to Western markets, a project seen as an economic and political boon for the troubled Caucasus region, reports the Turkish private channel NTV. The presidents of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Turkey were on hand for the ceremony at the Sangachal oil terminal, about 40 kilometers south of Azerbaijan's capital, Baku, to open the taps for the first drops of oil to enter the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline. The pipeline from Baku to the Turkish Mediterranean port of Ceyhan is seen as a significant move toward reducing the West's dependence on Middle Eastern oil. Most Caspian oil exports previously moved through Russian pipelines, often adding to the congestion in the Bosporus strait. The pipeline opens a new era in the Caspian Basin's development,. President George W. Bush said in a letter read by Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman. Mr. Bush, whose administration is seeking to diversify energy sources, called it a "monumental achievement". On the other hand, Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer said on Wednesday that another important project was the construction of an uninterrupted railway between the East and the West, which was Kars-Tbilisi-Baku railway project. "This railway will not only connect Turkey with South Caucasus and Central Asia but also revive the historical Silk Road in the 21st century," said Sezer. Sezer also stressed, "Turkey is ready to contribute to every project which aims to assure common prosperity of regional nations thanks to its location connecting the Caspian with the Mediterranean and Black Sea with the Middle East."
  • Linking Turkey's European Union membership bid to a referendum in France on the European Union constitution this weekend is a "very ugly and wrong" policy, Anatolia news agency quoted Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan as saying Friday. "We see here a situation where Turkey is used in (domestic) politics. The vote is not about Turkey," Erdogan told Turkish journalists during a visit to Kazakhstan, Turkey's Anatolian News Agency reported. Erdogan declined to comment on the widely predicted "no" that French voters are expected to give to the European Union constitution in the critical referendum Sunday. Turkey`s hopes of joining the European Union have been clouded by uncertainty over the European Union constitution, which is designed to prevent decision-making gridlock in the expanding bloc. The French "no" campaigners count in part at least on public opposition to Turkey`s entry into a bloc in which French influence is increasingly waning. In theory, an European Union decision last year to start accession talks with Turkey on October 3 is irreversible since all European Union states have signed up to it.
  • Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Wednesday pledged to step up efforts to persuade Germany's conservative opposition to drop their objections to the mainly Muslim Turkey joining the European Union. Apart from Mr. Berlusconi, Turkey's European Union bid has drawn strong backing from German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, but many Turks worry that possible early general elections in Germany later this year could bring to power the conservative Christian Democratic Union, an opponent of Ankara's membership. "In my speeches, I have always underlined one point: countries should disregard their own specific interests and act in line with the common interest of Europe as a whole," Berlusconi said through a translator. Mr. Berlusconi was in Istanbul to watch the Champions League final Wednesday between Italy's AC Milan, of which he is the honorary president, and Liverpool of England.
  • Mr. Mehmet Ali Talat, the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus said on Sunday that the United States should have a leading role in lifting the blockade on the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Mr. Talat said in his article published in The Washington Times that Greek Cypriots were again the side that had acquired many benefits although Turkish Cypriots accepted 'Annan plan' but the Greek Cypriots rejected it in the referendum held on the island last year. "The Greek Cypriot side hindered the efforts carried out by the European Union to lift or at least lessen the blockade on Turkish Cypriots. Although European Union leaders didn't approve the attitude of the Greek Cypriot side, no solution was found yet to overcome the legal and political impediments brought by the 'club-member Cyprus'," said Talat. "I believe that the United States which takes steps to lessen the inhuman restrictions on Turkish Cypriots, will also lead the efforts to end the isolation of Turkish Cypriots... I ask the international society to listen to our call for justice," said Talat.
  • A ban on flights by Turkish low-cost airline Onur Air to France, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland was lifted on Tuesday, after the airline promised to meet their safety concerns on its flights, civil aviation authority officials said. Onur Air welcomed the announcement in Ankara and said it would regain its former market share within 10 days. The Netherlands had imposed an initial ban on Onur Air on May 12, citing "serious safety deficiencies", and prompting France, Germany and Switzerland to follow suit and declare their territories off-limits as well. However, aviation officials in Denmark and Belgium said that there is nothing wrong with the airline. According to the Turkish airline, the bans have affected nearly 40,000 passengers. Last year Onur Air, which employs 900 employees and operates 26 aircraft, reported sales of 450 million dollars.
  • Headquartered in Antalya, the Santa Claus Foundation has filed a legal complaint at the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office against the Fener Greek Orthodox Church for holding a summit with the Patriarch of Jerusalem Irineos. Santa Claus Foundation Chairman Muammer Karabulut indicated that the Fener Greek Patriarchate established a religious court to try the Patriarch of Jerusalem without paying attention to Turkish laws. "Our lawyer Suleyman Cetin has filed a complaint at the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office via the Ankara Prosecutor's Office. Bartholomew and his representatives have acted against Turkish laws," said Mr. Karabulut. In his complaint application, Suleyman Cetin said that a summit or court that the Fener Greek Orthodox Church would hold can only take place in a religious republic.

  • The 3rd Annual Gallipoli photography festival will be held this weekend, May 27-29th. The festival will include numerous galleries and shows, as well as a panel for questions and comments. This year's theme is "Breath of Youth", and the photos included are mainly from young photographers. For more details, please visit http://www.fotofestival.org.
  • Speaking of Gallipoli, Producer Tolga Ornek hopes that his new documentary, "Gallipoli", will enlighten the world on the Gallipoli battles, as well as Mr. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's role in modern-day Turkey's formation. The documentary will first be screened on May 26th in Holland, Denmark, France, Germany and Austria, and then continue on to Australia and England by the end of the summer. "Gallipoli" re-enacts the historical events leading up to the Gallipoli battles and conveys the Turkish generosity and kindness towards the foreign soldiers on their land at the time. Mr. Ornek hopes his documentary will spark interest in Turkey's past and bring awareness and understanding to Turkish culture.
  • The 5th International Diyarbakir Arts & Culture Festival will take place May 28th-June 4th. This year's theme is "Sounds and Colors Towards Peace". Over 500 artists will attend the festival and there will be a total of 47 shows, focused mainly on eclectic, original music and artwork. The Virgin Mary Church located in Diyarbakir will also be hosting a special display for visitors for the occasion. The majority of the shows will take place in the outdoor ancient amphitheater in Sumer Park. The final concert will include popular Turkish musicians Zerrin Özer and Fuat Saka. Diyarbakir is the largest city in Turkey's southeast.
  • The popular tourist site on Turkey's Aegean coast, Ephesus, will now be even more attractive to tourists as evening lighting will be placed throughout the Ancient ruins. This way, tourists who prefer not to tour the sites in the summer heat can take the tours in the evening as well. The lighting project will be completed by August of this year.
  • The head of the French Anatolia Research Institute, Prof. Dr. Pierre Chuvin recently announced at a seminar that he believes that the Trojan War did not begin due to Paris' love affair, but in fact due to the richness and attractiveness of the region. His controversial new theory also states that the entire city was built underground in order to take advantage of the rich soil and natural resources, and that the previously determined dates of the war may be incorrect as well. Dr. Chuvin and his team will continue their research in order to elaborate on their theory. The ten year long war of Troy, which pitted the Trojans against the invading Greeks, was immortalised in the epic poem the Illiad by the Greek poet Homer. Interest in the campaign and the ancient city has recently been revitalised through the Hollywood blockbuster Troy, staring Brad Pitt and Eric Bana. The remains of the ancient city of Troy is located in Northwestern Turkey. See <http://www.britannica.com/seo/t/troas/>
  • The building of the Mosaic Museum of Gaziantep in South Eastern Turkey has been completed and will open to the public with an inauguration ceremony including Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on June 22nd. The largest museum of its kind in the world, the museum will display Turkey's rich mosaic history and tradition, as well as beautiful wall murals and mausoleums. Among the mosaics will be those unearthed at the ruins of the nearby ancient city of Zeugma. The ancient city is partially flooded by the waters of a recently built dam. Archeologists conducted emergency excavations before the flooding and recovered many pieces of exquisite mosaic. Uncovered in the excavations were 65 base mosaics depicting mythological stories, and 1200 square feet of murals. Many of the characters portrayed in the mosaics are deities and mythological characters like Achilles, Zeus, Dionysus, Venus, Poseidon, Oceanus, Ariadne, and Perseus.
